TWO - THOUSAND - AND - NINE.
As the new year approaches lets take a moment to reflect. Obama was inaugurated, the king of pop died, and we all finally got to see James Cameron’s Avatar. Sure, yeah, that’s all interesting. But I take this time to think about the albums of 2009 that really made a mark with me.
So I’ll make this short and sweet. Here is my top ten personal favorites of 2009 accompanied with my favorite song from each and a few incomplete sentences.

10 // Atlas Sound /// Logos

Perfectly complements San Francisco weather. I love to feel like I’m floating through space.
” What did you want to see? What did you want to be when you grew up? “
Atlas Sound - Walkabout (w/Noah Lennox)

09 // DD/MM/YYYY /// Black Square

This whole album is just one big mind fuck. Orderly chaos, really.
I love it.
” Songs of protest never sound like they change. “
DD/MM/YYYY - Bronzage

08 // Japandroids /// Post-Nothing

I love feel good albums, and that’s what I get out of Japandroids. I like their classic lo-fi garage rock sound. I picture Japandroids being Death From Above 1979’s baby brother and frankly that’s who I pretend they are.
Japandroids - The Boys Are Leaving Town

07 // Julian Casablancas /// Phrazes For The Young

Phrazes For The Young is catchy as hell and did a good job at tiding me over until a fourth Strokes album is out. I loved it regardless of the cheese 80’s synth, too.
” Our time is over. Don’t you know that if a time warp was open I’d stay right in my place. That war is over. “
Julian Casablancas - 4 Chords Of The Apocalypse

06 // Bombay Bicycle Club /// I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose

Familiar, but fresh. I think they have staying power.
Bombay Bicycle Club - Always Like This

05 // Wild Beasts /// Two Dancers

Everything about this album is just so damn beautiful.
“A crude art, a bovver boot ballet- equally elegant and ugly. “
Wild Beasts - Hooting & Howling

04 // The Dead Weather // Horehound

The Dead Weather is easily the most badass of all the super groups that popped up this year. I couldn’t get enough of Horehound.
The Dead Weather - Hang You From The Heavens

03 // HEALTH /// GET COLOR

HEALTH is pure energy. They put on the best show I’ve ever seen. I’m pretty sure GET COLOR could soundtrack the first two Terminators, too.
HEALTH - NICE GIRLS

02 // Arctic Monkeys /// Humbug

Arctic Monkeys’ will never disappoint me. Humbug went in a totally different direction and I loved every second of it.
” All the pretty visitors came and waved their arms and cast the shadow of a snake pit on the wall. “
Arctic Monkeys - Pretty Visitors

01 // Animal Collective /// Merriweather Post Pavilion

There is no doubt that Merriweather Post Pavilion is my favorite album of the year. It was a harder decision picking my favorite song off the album. I might even put this on a Best Of The Decade list.
“There isn’t much that I feel I need. A solid soul and the blood I bleed. With a little girl and by my spouse. I only want a proper house. “
Animal Collective - My Girls
