COACHELLA DO WANT LIST: #1 THE CRIBS

It’s that time of year again to start preparing for Coachella. Look over the line up, boys and girls! When you’re done updating your Facebook status be sure to check the line up a second time so not to miss those small print bands that you may have quickly glanced over in your rush to feel socially relevant. It’s those bands written in the fine print that really make Coachella what it is. Besides the whole road trip with friends experience and blah blah blah. After all, it’s those bands that you actually have a chance of seeing. Everyone has their own way of experiencing music, mine doesn’t take place standing behind three football fields worth of people. Though, like a sucker, I’ll still stand behind those thousands of people to see Gorillaz, Thom Yorke, Pavement and others because I love them. Also I’m not crazy enough to get there early and hold on to the railing for eighteen hours. I’m not spending nearly three hundred dollars to stand in place all day. And on a side note, has anyone noticed DJ Lance Rock is on the line up?! SUPER! FANTASTIC! AMAZING!

Well, with order having nothing to do with importance I’ll slowly post my COACHELLA DO WANT LIST.

#1: The Cribs:

Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever is still to this day one of my favorite albums of all time. I’ve been really enjoying their latest album Ignore The Ignorant featuring their newest member Johnny Marr. Initially Johnny Marr joining The Cribs seems really odd, completely unexpected. Thankfully, after seeing and hearing the new addition in action, it works for me. Their sound has definitely changed, but in a good way. Not in a disappointing It’s Blitz kind of way. Check out some Ignore The Ignorant tracks below, along with some video. YAY!

The Cribs - Victim Of Mass Production

The Cribs - Is Anybody There?

The Cribs - Stick To Yr Guns

The Cribs - Men’s Needs

The Cribs - Don’t You Wanna Be Relevant?

I would have posted the video of The Cribs playing “We Share The Same Skies” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, but NBC hates you and me.

So in conclusion: MUST SEE NOW! DO WANT!

SURFER BLOOD

My current addiction is Surfer Blood. I’m a sucker for any band with a garage rock feel. Just toss in some reverb and feedback to seal the deal. They remind me of old Weezer meets The Cribs. What a great combo, right? Listen to their album Astro Coast. SO GOOD!

Surfer Blood - Swim (to reach the end)

Surfer Blood - Harmonix

JAY REATARD, YOU WILL BE MISSED.

I will seriously miss this guy. Why do the greats die young?

Thank goodness for being mediocre, right?

WHITE HINTERLAND

Today I feel like turning on my stereo and relaxing. Well, I feel like that every day, but today especially. So I’ve put on White Hinterland, a Portland band with a serene sound. I’ve been checking out their upcoming album Kairos, listening to it for most of today. I like it, especially “Icarus”. It’s the kind of music I have to be in the mood for though. I can’t listen to White Hinderland unless I’m laying in a hammock, drinking chocolate milk, and have the mindset that I’m somewhere tropical. Luckily, that’s just what I’m doing now….with the exception of the hammock part.

Note To Self: Go buy a hammock.

I LIEK CHOCOLATE MILK.

LOVE IS ALL // KUNGEN // TWO THOUSAND AND TEN INJURIES

Love Is All’s third album Two Thousand And Ten Injuries is almost out. I’ve been enjoying Kungen, a track from the album. Those “Ba Ba Ba”s are infectious and I feel like this song calls for a sixties-esque montage of people taking acid for the first time. PSYCHEDELICS AND HAIR EVERYWHERE!

NEW ANIMAL COLLECTIVE VIDEO // BROTHER SPORT

Does it make sense to say a video looks like how a song sounds? If it does, then that’s what I have to say about this Brother Sport video.

Good, good, good, good, good, good, good stuff.

REAL ESTATE

Damn, I really love this album. It’s perfect to have on during those quiet relaxing nights at home. Tonight I’ll just lay back, turn on some Real Estate, drift off into a peaceful sleep and see where my dreams will take me.

I feel like Real Estate’s self titled was probably 2009’s most underrated album. Well, maybe not underrated, but definitely unnoticed. I know they got a good amount of attention with bloggers, but even still I think their debut album was worthy of more than just some hot blogger chatter.

They’re on tour now. Unfortunately they aren’t coming to the bay. I’d love to go see them. If you get the chance to see them perform you should let me know how it goes.

VAMPIRE WEEKEND // CONTRA

Music this year is getting off to a great start. I loved Vampire Weekend’s self titled debut, and Contra is the perfect follow up.

If you haven’t gotten to hear any of it, the entire album is streaming on the band’s myspace.

Vampire Weekend - Horchata

AND I WILL MISS YOU MOST OF ALL, SCARECROW

Harlem Shakes

The one thing I still can’t get over about 2009 is Harlem Shakes breaking up. I don’t even know if they really did. It’s just kind of the word that’s been floating around since Brooklyn Vegan said so. Maybe I’m just in denial, refusing to accept or even acknowledge their break up. Who cares, I’ll hold on to the little thread of hope I have that they will get back together. I loved Technicolor Health and was eager to hear what they would come up with in the future. I thought they really had staying power. COME BACK TO ME!

OLD AND GRAY//SOULS WORTH SAVING

Old & Gray

I always love talking about local bands. On today’s agenda: Old And Gray, the solo project of Mike Hale. If you’re one to check out talented Bay Area bands you’ll probably know him as the drummer of Room For A Ghost or the singer of Phantom Float. Lately I’ve been listening to his latest album, Souls Worth Saving. The album delivers the kind of raw synth sounds and heavy drum machine beats that you would expect to hear from a Nine Inch Nails track. It’s only three songs long, but reinforces the old saying of “quality over quantity”. The three tracks have a sort of creepy crawly kind of feel to them. The most different of the three, “Oh Donnie”, actually makes me think of Menomena with its deep and eerie piano. Overall the songs brings to mind other dimensions, what dwells within them, space, the supernatural, and other strange things that could easily be out of a Twilight Zone episode. You can download Souls Worth Saving for free off Old And Gray’s BandCamp (donations welcome). Check it out!
